Departing from the road-end at Jackson Bay, we hike straight into the wilderness, over the hill and down the riverbed to Smoothwater Bay for lunch, a location so named due to its calm and sheltered nature. The afternoon takes us around a coastline varying from rocky platform to sandy beach to quiet cove to the hut at Stafford Bay. The day is an easier one allowing time to explore and relax.

We hike further down the coast along stunning, empty and wild beach, flush with wildlife, to Teer Creek. The coast runs below the Cascade Plateau, a giant and ancient glacial moraine laden with pounamu and with the full array of flora, fauna spilling down onto the beach. We continue further towards Whisky Creek where some of New Zealand’s largest fur seal colonies exist. Returning back in the afternoon, this coast is well known for its lobster (crayfish) and other shellfish and, if conditions allow, this may supplement the evening meal back at Stafford Bay hut – a true delight.

Today we hike inland heading up the Stafford River and over the saddle back into the Smoothwater River valley, a valley resplendent with gorgeous streams and waterways.
